I have no doubt Mack would have helped this team, but I'm not sure he was worth potentially ruining the salary structure of the team to do it.

 

I would let more cap savvy persons kick that around in detail, but that's my thoughts on that.

Exactly.  The team has to be smart about how they use their cap money, and they aren't going to over-reach for a player to that extent no matter how good he might be.  If they think they can get production that's not quite as good, but good enough to move forward from one of their younger players, they'd look at the differential and pass every time.  Teams that wind up in cap trouble blow the bundle on one player.
