But with Monroe you don't pay him just because you can if you don't feel he is worth the money.

Exactly.  Nobody here was lauding the outstanding play of Monroe until he was gone.  Then suddenly he was this force of nature that we couldn't stand to lose.  He wasn't worth the kind of money he was going to command as a starting LT in the league, so the team made the best of a situation and traded him away.  Long term it didn't hurt this team one bit.
