Unabated to the quarterback is a 5 yard penalty even if you hit him.  We have had our QB pummeled and only the 5 yard penalty.  We debated this in a thread somewhere around here.  Basically the conclusion was, if every team started exploiting this to take cheap shots on the QB, the rule would get changed.  There is nothing stopping a defense from running through the QB on every offsides "unabated" play.
