I'd call that selective memory. It was a tight game where neither team "owned" the other. Ole Miss was completely ineffective on the ground and that means you have to go with a riskier offense. Ole Miss in that game had no turnovers from the passing game. In their other 5 games they had 6 interceptions. A lot of people really fail to internalize that turnovers are more luck than skill. Even if you pressure the QB you have to get lucky that he throws to where a defender can get it instead of missing in a spot that people can't make a catch. Forcing fumbles is a skill. Having a ball carrier fail to protect the ball properly and getting them to bounce to your guys is luck.

 

Ole Miss has forced 16 turnovers and lost 10 this year.

 

Alabama has forced 8 and lost 11.

 

Kentucky has forced 16 and lost 8.

 

FIU has forced 24 and lost 13.

 

Turnovers forced have been shown over and over to be a non-predictive statistic meaning that it's not something you can count on week to week. In the big game, Alabama had 2 turnovers and Ole Miss had 1. If that had gone the other way is there anyone that thinks Alabama doesn't win? Not to mention, the game was at Ole Miss.

 

For those trying to spin what I'm saying, I'm not saying Ole Miss didn't earn the win. When the turnover roulette comes up your way you still have to make the interception or hustle for the fumble, but I am saying that games where turnovers play a significant role in the outcome, especially close games, are not good predictors of future games.

 

Both Mississippi schools ARE really good. They've also benefited from a little bit of luck. They've earned top rankings. They are not one of the all time greats and there are teams with just as much front-line talent and more depth. Not many, but some.
