Just a reminder about firing a coach before his 3rd/4th season

#69

Quote:You're confusing cause and effect. Teams that suck tend to hire bad coaches that need to be replaced. The sucking comes down from the top. Secondly, good coaches will show promise in year two and will thus not be fired, so there's a selection effect in the process. If you keep hiring bad coaches, keeping them longer is not going to help your team.

Exactly.

Its amazing how embarrassingly clueless some people are that they think keeping a bad coach will eventually work out.

Certain Jags fans on this board honestly believe its the opposite

The 49ers went through three bad coaches before they hired Harbaugh. They kept him, does that suddenly make them a smart team? Or is it just because he actually won in his first two seasons and even the Browns wouldn't be crazy enough to cut him after that? By your logic the 49ers should have stuck with Singletary (or Nolan, or Erickson).

Agreed. Although for reasons unknown to man, the 49ers are indeed rumored to be parting ways with Harbaugh at seasons end.

Gus hasn't shown any promise this year. The team hasn't improved much over last year's disaster, not in the record, nor the O/D rankings. He has no previous track record as a head coach, and only 4 years as a coordinator, of which only two were above bad. His successor did even better, implying that Gus was not the reason the Seattle defense was so good in 2011 and 2012.

Agreed again.

As a matter of fact the Seattle defense didn't start to really improve until Pete Carroll arrived. Not only that, but it didn't peak until Gus Bradley was gone. I remember in 2012 in the divisional playoffs, Bradley's defense almost choked up a loss after blowing a huge lead to the Falcons in the second half. Their OFFENSE had to save the day with a late score. Good for Bradley that Mike Smith's defense equally sucked.

If he turns the team around in these next 10 games, then great. If he doesn't, then apparently the Jags are one of those teams that suck from the top down. Didn't anyone see that hiring an inexperienced coach to develop a bunch of inexperienced players was a recipe for disaster?

Caldwell went too strictly in following the Atlanta plan by choosing Bradley. It was his version of Mike Smith. Although Mike Smith in all reality isn't that great either. If the Falcons fire him at seasons end and the Jags have an opening I hope to God we don't make the mistake of hiring Mike Smith. If thats the level of "upgrade" you're settling for, then you might as well not make any changes at all.
