If Michigan was down a point on the one yard line with one second to go to osu, Iowa, Iowa St, MSU...they would give the same amount of effort in every single game.  Not just because its their main rival.

 

Again, these are anecdotal situations. Not EVERY situation is going to be different. If Alabama is beating Hofstra 21-0, the DE might hold up from hitting a QB after the ball is released. If Alabama is up 21-0 to Auburn, that QB is taking a lick.

 

There are situations in every game where motivation / intensity is peaked. In rivalry games, those situations occur more in rivalry games because every time you line up you stare at someone you hate. This is college football 101, folks.
