"Going big" in free agency just to get names people like you recognize won't help this team do anything but burn through cap space.  Going SMART in free agency is more appropriate, but I won't bother to quibble over the details. 

 

"Failure projects."  Classic.  Neither Gerhart nor Watson were high dollar acquisitions.  They were transitional players the team brought in to see if they could be fixtures in the future of the franchise.  Watson has already proven he's not, and they've made their decision.  Gerhart is not far behind.  Oh well. It's not like there was a deep pool of talent to pursue in free agency.
I agree with the premise that if you have 1st and 2nd year players who are starters, it should be good for your team down the road. However, if some of those "starters" wouldn't be starting on any other roster, thats not a good sign for your team.
