And the consequences of punishing an innocent person goes far beyond the punishment itself. Those Duke lacrosse program and those players all carry a stigma now. I asked my girlfriend what she new about the Duke lacrosse case and she said "Didn't they get in trouble for rape? I think they got in trouble because they were hazing and sodomizing players". These innocent people now carry that stigma for the rest of their lives because they were wrongly suspended based on false allegations.
