The problem, Eric, is that a significant part of the republican voter base consists of southern racists, which is why the south turned republican after the series of federal court decisions and laws abolishing slavery and attempting to create equality for blacks in the south were passed in the 1960s.

 

The republicans as a national party understand their current path is unsustainable, but in the short term they know need the racist vote if they want to be at all viable.
