I've read books where LBJ was behind it but even though the authors give compelling arguments, I think LBJ permitted the Warren Commission, or better instructed the Warren Commission to find a single lone nut shooter to keep the country from chaos.

 

You have to remember, in those days (and I was alive and well) the U.S. and Russia were in a saber-rattling confrontation over democracy vs communism. Strife was perking up in Southeast Asia, Cuba, Chzechoslovakia,  Korea, and other regions of the globe.

 

However, look at the events of that day. The president and leader of the free world is shot in a limousine and hundreds of people are scattering like roaches when the lights come on. The police, FBI, Secret Service are scrambling around for shooters, witnesses, injured and basic chaos in Dealey Plaza trying to round up suspects. Then miraculously an hour and so later they show up in a theatre to arrest somebody who walked in without paying. C'mon!
