Blasphemy: If they're available, should the Jags draft Mariota or Winston?

Quote:This subject keeps coming up. Someone please tell me an instance in which a GM has ever selected a QB in the top 5 two years in a row, because I can't think of one.

It ain't going to happen. Why should it? Is this team one back up quarterback away from a title? LOL.

If Mariota some how beats out Bortles (not likely) you have a top 5 pick sitting on the bench not developing. If Mariota gets beaten out by Bortles (much more likely) you have a top 5 pick sitting on the bench (or practice squad) not developing, and you've "wasted" the pick.

And no, he wouldn't have much trade value. So, why use a top 5 pick to get a third round pick (or whatever) in trade?

Makes no sense.

Because no GM has the stones to do it! It's an old way of thinking, and teams do it, just to it! It won't happen. I am 100% sure the Jags are committed to Bortles and maybe that's the right thing to do, but you will have let the better player pass you buy, as a GM you have to be comfortable with that. It would be an extreme thing to do, and the Jags could not keep Borltes.

Case in point. in 1998 the Chargers took the biggest QB bust in history. on 1999 they passed on Daunte Culpepper who before a knee injury was an elite QB for several years and almost went to multipl super bowls. This is an extreme case but why keep doing what every team does after drafting a bust?

You can also use those two drafts to argue the other way as the colts took James, however it's a myth that Manning had a bad rookie season, anyone who tells you otherwise doesnt know football or their nfl history.
