Stage 1: playbook and mechanics.

Stage 2: Let him make his mistakes and play his way.

Stage 3: Rein him in and teach him control.

Stage 4: Reinforce mechanics in offseason

Stage 5: Take the reins off and hand him the keys.


This to me was the plan all along. They just had to throw him in earlier than expected. We saw stages 1 and 2 for most of the season hence the early ints. Now we are seeing stage 3.


So long as he doesnt continue the quick read mentality next year then im fine. You cant play Gunslinger at all times though. Even Brady and Brees sometimes have to play small ball to win games. The key is teaching him both mentalities and when to use each one.

 

A full offseason and training camp as the undisputed starter will definitely help him. I think part of the problem is because we planned to redshirt Blake Bortles, he was not prepared enough when Gus Bradley said, "You're in," at the first Colts game and announced less than two hours later he will start at San Diego. We should see Stage 5 when the 2015 season starts.
