My guess is Gase lost out on the 49ers HC job for two reasons:

1. He doesn't seem to be a good match with the ultra mobile Colin Kaepernick.

2. He doesn't have any HC experience. Being that the 49ers ownership expects the team to be a Super Bowl contender in the 2015 season, the lack of any HC experience is significant.

John Elway said Peyton Manning will be involved in the process. Meanwhile Manning is selling Adam Gase to other teams who need new head coaches.

The 49ers expect too much if they think a rookie head coach (which Jim Tomsula is) can go to the Super Bowl. Jim Harbaugh was the exception, not the rule.
