Art Rooney (and the other owners) approved the rule, so they saw first hand the lack of consideration minority coaches were afforded when it came to interviewing for head coaching positions.

 

You question wasn't very clear, so I didn't understand it. To be fair, you did elude to minorities not needing to be interviewed base on merit with your initial post when you talked about the 'hard way'. Earning it = the hard way

 

Eliminating the Rooney Rule doesn't mean they're going to scale back on minority hires. You seem to believe that this rule somehow saves minority hires and gives them a fighting chance when they would otherwise not have it. 

 

There are only 32 teams in the NFL. These people talk and they all have an idea which coaches are up-and-comers and which ones aren't that good. Just because Rooney was an advocate for this change, it doesn't mean he's the foremost expert or that it's even necessary right now.
