For the people that just want to NFL bash, could you imagine if he got into a wreck and killed someone?  The same people here would be complaining the NFL didnt do enough to help him out.
 

If he worked for anyone else his skill set is such that it would be glossed over. Only in places like a sports league can the best player/employee in the entire world be casually taken out of the entire industry. If you terminated him in the real world where the monopoly on commerce doesn't exist your competition would immediately scoop him up and use him against you.
