I know many 80+ year olds who are sharp as a tack mentally.  I also know a few who have definitely lost their capability of handling complex business affairs.  Most recognize when they can't do it any longer.  One guy I know practiced law up until he died at 91, and he never lost it mentally.  His body was failing him for the last 10 years of his life, but he always had a brilliant mind.
