The thing is that this offseason was more or less intended to be a bust.

 

It was a tactical move by Dave knowing full well that adding higher priced talent through free agency was going to make this a 5-6 win team with significant money tied up in players that won't be around when we're actually competing for a championship. He purposely brought in younger, lower priced talent to see if they could be building blocks for this team going forward.

 

I'm guessing he wasn't expecting this level of ineptitude from the team, but in all honesty I think he'd gladly take it as long as the young guys were consistently improving throughout the season. His model wasn't to build the team to be a true competitor in the first year or two because that means you're overpaying and overvaluing players for the near future and forgoing the longterm. That method has generally been proven to be the wrong approach, i.e. 2011-2012 Jacksonville Jaguars free agent classes. He burned everything to the ground to build it back up again, not rebuild on the same faulty foundation that Gene Smith attempted to build on and failed.

 

This team isn't being built to be a flash in the pan, but rather for long term and sustained success. Unfortunately that requires patience and acceptance of some poor play in the early stages, but that shouldn't be too unexpected considering how miserable our two prior GMs failed over the past decade.
