He got signed to a back-up players deal.. yes you could find another Alualu in FA, but why sign a new guy to learn a whole new team, playbook, scheme. Alualu is still always been known as a high character guy, with good work ethic and if you don't think that stuff matters, you are misunderstanding the deeper value of team and chemistry. to a certain degree, the Alualus are important to a team. I think the negativity of Alualu comes from disappointment of his draft pick. I hate when fans do this to players that are drafted high. If he was a 5th round pick, everyone would be saying what a great pick he was because he contributes from a back up spot. 

 

I would not have lost sleep if he wasn't retained, but this signing is still better than a late draft pick or FA. It's minimal investment for a character guy who knows the scheme and knows he's a backup. He still has to make the team and quantity of players in camp is important for competition. Alualu is expendable if he gets beat out in camp.
