Nobody is saying he should go out there without a helmet and throw precaution out the window.  

 

This is a pure apples and oranges comparison.  First of all, you aren't getting paid millions of dollars to smoke cigarettes.  Secondly, at the end of a football career there is a small chance that you could develop CTE as opposed to a 100% chance that your health will be impacted negatively by smoking cigarettes for a lifetime.  The difference being that in one instance you get paid millions and there is a chance your health is impacted, and the other being you pay money for guaranteed health issues.  Small Chance vs Guaranteed Certainty 

 

We might say someone is afraid of jumping out of a plane with a parachute, but nobody calls them chicken for not jumping out of a plane without a parachute.
