I don't like the whole "automatic first down". Offenses are given enough already and a face mask on 3rd and 40 should make it a 15 yard penalty with a replay of the down (3rd and 25). Not to give the offense a free set of downs.

Automatic first downs are reserved for personal fouls, which are penalties deemed to be blatant rules violations that either endanger safety, or are poor sportsmanship. They exist to discourage bonehead play, and are even in all respects.


The same week that Golden Tate scored the TD with the taunt, a defensive back was flagged for taunting as he high stepped an INT in to the endzone. This score stood as well.


If you dont like personal fouls, get mad at players for committing them regularly.
