Jaworski: Mariota will go No. 1 to Bucs

Quote:If you read the thing about what Jameis lawyer said on ESPN, well they did that for clicks and made it as a big bad headline, the lawyer praised Winston on the field and said he was a lock to go number 1, and he pretty much said no kid coming out of college is ready for the NFL life, but ESPN made it out to be like he was blasting Winston just for a shocking headline.

Now as far as who will go number one, I think the coaches and scouts want Winston but, the owners want to think long and hard about it, not locks yet.
It was flattering by any means as it pertains to off the field:

Quote:"Jameis is ready to be an NFL quarterback on the field, but he is not ready to be an NFL player off the field," said Cornwell.

But Cornwell said the NFL has resources to help players with that transition. He said those resources were explained to Winston during his meeting with Goodell and Troy Vincent, NFL executive vice president of football operations.

"I told (Winston), 'Listen, if you decide not to avail yourself of these resources, you'd better have an option … because this league will chew you up and spit you out if you don't," said Cornwell.

"So our role is to make sure that first he knows what these resources are, and second that he avails himself of them. … He's not just a football player. He is a man who plays football. … We have to assist him in developing and growing as a person and becoming a man in this system, and it's not going to be easy."

That's not something you want someone saying about your possible face of the franchise QB. Especially with Johnny Manziel still fresh in everyone's minds. He tried to clean it up afterwards but the damage was already done.
"Before you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, if he gets angry, he's a mile away and barefoot."
