I don't think he was elected BECAUSE he was Black just like I don't think the majority of people that oppose him oppose him BECAUSE he is Black. Obama was the perfect example of a politician playing class warfare, now it's a reality a large section of the Black community is poor so naturally a politician campaigning as their champion that will fix inequality is going to get their vote. He could've been Purple but if he's promising Universal Healthcare, Ending Bush-Era Tax Cuts (seen as tax cuts for the rich), Foreclosure Prevention (in 2008 everyone was in fear of foreclosure), and Immigration Reform (amnesty) then YES he was pandering to the poor with handouts.
