Just because of the bigger need at edge rusher.

It's like a team taking the top OL talent because they have a need there more so than another position.

Flashback to 2009. The Rams have a new head coach and the second overall pick in the draft.

Do they select a QB? or Top D player? Nope. They select an offensive lineman, not because Smith was a better overall talent than  Curry, Jackson, or Sanchez, the next 3 selections, but because they needed an Oline that could protect the QB they had currently.

 

Williams may very well be the safer pick. But when I balance value and need. I see Fowler or Beasley as the options we want and need.

While Miller and Marks have injury concerns, Odrick can kick inside and we have some depth there. We need a superstar at the pass rush position. We need to swing for the fences.

 

EDIT: Granted the Rams missed pretty bad on Smith.... but even still...
