1. Williams 2. Mariota 3. Jags trade down
|
The consensus has Leonard Williams as the best player in the draft. That said, he really doesn't fill a need for the Jags. So if we are confronted with the opportunity to draft him, it seems to me the best thing to do would be to trade down just a spot or two. If we trade down with the Skins, for example, and pick up an extra say 2nd round pick, we would still wind up with either Fowler or Cooper. The extra 2nd rounder would give us some ammo to move back up into the back end of the first round and get a player that unexpectedly drops. This to me is the ideal scenario.
The draft pick value chart says dropping from #3 to #5 is worth a high second round pick. We might throw back a 4th round pick to make the Skins feel better. If we cannot trade down, we have to draft him. But this is why trades happen, right? You are faced with the best player left on your board, and he doesn't fill a need. The ideal draft pick is when need and value intersect. If you have the best player available, but he doesn't fill a need, trade down. Get maximum value for the pick.
