Just stop and think in the past few years Russia has asserted itself once again as a major geo-political factor when just the last election cycle Mitt Romney was laughed at for suggesting they could pull off such a move. 

 

Either way Global powers play both sides but I don't buy the narrative Russia has nothing to gain by having conflict with Western powers. Truth be told Russia would gain greatly if the Western world where to step back especially fiscally. To me that's the real game, Russia and China working to undermine the dollar, that's the real war it's a currency war.
