Please, you're really going to chalk it up to freezing in the moment?  Most of these idiots know practically nothing about American history because it's barely taught in public schools.  I know this because I am the father of a high school aged child, and even her contemporaries who attend public schools, and their parents will readily admit they're not given much history that isn't of the politically correct variety in their indoctrination centers. 

 

This wasn't stage fright.  They're simply not being taught. You try to chalk it up to it being a long time since they studied the American Revolution.  There are some pretty basic dates that every American should know instinctively.  Freshly graduated high schoolers should be able to rattle that off immediately.  The funny thing is, this is in Northern Virginia where these kids live.  That's one of the most wealthy, and one of the most liberal areas of the country.  So, it's not a shock that these kids have no clue.  They're immersed in it.
