Should the confederate flag continued to be honored?
|
Quote: Once Walmart decided to ban the Confederate Flag, they opened the door for a reaction that wasn't going to be favorable. It's a combination of Walmart not being prepared for the reaction ( they should have been prepared ) and deep down not being concerned about what ISIS stands for. Their apology doesn't sound convincing. You really think Walmart isn't concerned about what ISIS stands for? For God's sake, they're a group that beheads civilians for fun. I think Walmart knows and is concerned about what ISIS stands for, they just don't expect their associates to recognize a flag that 99 out of 100 random Americans wouldn't know. Their apology says exactly what it needs to: our decorator didn't know what the emblem was, we've made sure that our associates know and won't print it again, and screw that guy for taking advantage of them like that. I don't see this as as big a deal as you do, apparently. Here's how I look at it: if Walmart had printed a Nazi flag on a cake after refusing a rebel flag, this would be a story worth telling, but this YouTube crusader didn't go in and ask them to print a Nazi flag. Know why? Because he knew that would be turned down, because Walmart would not knowingly print a symbol of hate on a cake. Instead, he picked a highly obscure symbol that 95+ out of 100 Americans would not recognize and had it printed instead. Why? Because while he knew that there was zero chance of getting a swastika cake, there was a very good chance of getting an ISIS cake that he could then take home, put on YouTube and get a few hundred thousand views and a pat on the back from a certain subset of the population. Walmart's statement is absolutely right; he unfairly manipulated one of their employees to further his own agenda. If Walmart makes a second ISIS cake, then there's something newsworthy. One nutjob working the system for the express purpose of making an inflammatory video doesn't warrant Walmart writing a book about how tearfully sorry they are. Also, as to the video being banned on YouTube, the first link you posted has the original video embedded in the page...from YouTube...where you can still see it on the original poster's account. |
