Our recollection of history is changing, again.

 

A new generation has been taught something different about the Civil War than I was taught.  Now that history is REAL (to them).  So much REALER than the history I was taught.

 

There is only one reason why a flag that wasn't offensive in 1981 is now offensive in 2015, and it's not because "we know better now."  It's because we are told what actually happened was different than what actually happened.  And how one feels about what happened is even more important than what happened.

 

I will ask the youngsters - and they are mostly youngsters -on the board that say that the Civil War was all about slavery because that's what they were taught:

 

What will be the "Confederate flag" tipping point of your 50s?  Will it be the Iraq war?  9/11?  The Bush 43 presidency?  What history will change in your lifetime to the point where you'll have to say to your kids, "Hey, that's not the way I remember it.."

 

In 1981, no one was offended by the General Lee.  No one should be offended by it today.  The only people that should be offended are poor white Southerners that were mercilessly stereotyped by the show.
