I was a witness to an incident at a bar due to a guy trying to talk to a girl and her friend taking exception to that. It began as a verbal confrontation, escalated when the friend dumped her pint of beer on his head and him returning the favor. It ended when the friend took the empty pint glass and smashed it in his face leaving him with a 3 inch shard of glass sticking out of his eye and a trip in an ambulance to the emergency room where they had to remove his eyeball.

 

This guy obviously underestimated the level of threat the girl posed.

 

The reality is that in these types of situations between strangers at a bar, there is no way to accurately gauge the actual threat level.

 

I am not condoning his actions or saying I would have reacted in the same manner, but I think it is naive to think that she didn't potential pose a significant threat had she gotten the opportunity to take another swing at him, especially if she had been able to get a hold of one of many types of objects that are often within hands reach on a bar.

 

There is no way to know to what level a stranger, man or woman, is willing to escalate a situation especially by a person that appeared to be overly aggitated by a situation that is quite normal in the confines of a crowded nightclub.
