Case Keenum
|
Quote:I wouldn't call Keenum a one trick pony. He's athletic and has one heck of an arm. But I'll reserve judgement until I see how he does this week vs the Cards secondary. His best attribute is his quick release.. SNF timed it. He gets the ball off in .33 seconds which is one of the best releases in the game. Also I don't see how willing to throw it down field and challenge a defense makes him a "one trick pony".. isn't that what you want out of your QB? "One trick ponies" are those that down have that ability and can only check down or throw intermediate passes. That is the entire reason why he's now starting over Matt Schaub.. who would never challenge defenses.. Hence why Matt Schaub is now the record holder for consecutive pick 6's. Corners stopped fearing his ability to challenge them deep so they would just squat on routes. Through injury or declining skills (which were already limited to begin with) Schaub turned into the definition of a "game manager".. and then turned into a bad game manager once defenses realized they didn't have to fear getting beat over the top. That and corners realized they didn't have to cover long, because Schaub wears concrete shoes. Case's ability to scramble around and buy extra time for his receivers to get open down field is another reason why the big play ability has returned to this offense.. His skill set if very similar to a Russell Wilson. The guy who beat out Matt Flynn Read this article that illustrates the difference between the two.. Scroll down to the impact of change. https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/20...-week-9-3/ There's a reason why Andre Johnson is now looking like he's in the middle of his prime and has spoke highly of Keenum instead of Schaub. Schaub has cost Andre countless TDs over the years (Andre Johnson has caught as many TD passes playing 2 games with Keenum as he did the previous 20 playing with Schaub). Schaub would just check down for the safe throw.. once defenses figured that out he was done here. However just because Keenum will go for the homerun and challenge deep, that doesn't mean that is all he is able to do. He can throw underneath too if nothing is down field. He's only had two starts and he's off to a great start.. since he's only had two starts he only has room to improve as he gets more playing time/experience. |
