It'll all depend on Luck's contract. If he breaks the bank like Peyton Manning, the supporting cast will thin out around him. If he takes a more team-friendly deal to keep talent around him, the Colts could be contenders for a long time.


I don't fully get the push for $110-120M contracts. I mean, at some point, doesn't it just become numbers on a sheet? Funny money? I'd wager that the average person could survive more than comfortably for their entire life on $10M, so contracts that pay almost twice that per year still baffle me a bit.

This issue isn't so much what is "funny money" and what isn't. It's for the viability of the players union. If the best new up and coming player takes a team friendly deal it gives the team all the leverage on the next guy who wants a contract.


The easiest way to explain it is take Lebron James. I'm pretty sure he makes more than enough money in endorsements and wouldn't have a problem playing at the veteran minimum to keep talent around. The issue is when the next guy tries to get paid the team has the ability to say "well the best player is playing for such and such. What makes you think you deserve a fraction of that.


He may not get the facetiously floated $300 million contract but anything less than him being the highest paid qb would be a detriment to that system. He will get paid and it will be a ridiculous amount.
