Go ahead and believe it was solely or almost entirely about slavery if you wish.  The South was offered twice a Constitutional Amendment to protect slavery, but it was declined because it was only one of many grievances by the South.  Four of the States didn't even join the Confederacy until Lincoln started the Civil War and invaded the South.  They were protecting what they perceived as one sovereignty being invaded by an aggressor.
