He had the physical ability for it, and he flashed the mental acuity for it as well. I think a couple key factors played into his career trajectory. First and foremost has been the injuries. He's spent so much time injured that it's been hard for a team to put its faith in him as a fixture in the secondary. Second, and I know I'll catch some flak for this, was his benching early in his second year. He got scorched in the opener and was deactivated for a couple of weeks afterwards in favor of David Jones. Vic hinted on a couple of occasions that he looked so bad in coverage that Del Rio was considering moving him to safety. I'm not sure he ever fully recovered his confidence, and although he was a good corner for us when he was on the field, he never came close to reaching the heights many of us thought he would.

 

Worth noting that during his one year in San Diego, he was benched three times.

 

On the flip side, though, he's still only 28, you'd expect him to be pretty well healed-up after sitting 2014 out, and he did flash ability earlier in his career. For a fourth or fifth corner who mostly plays on special teams, he's a pretty low-risk high-reward guy. Not worth anything more than vet minimum to check him out in camp, but if he can stay on the field and regain the swagger he showed as a rookie, he could surprise.
