To recap what actually happened, Thomas had a defender trailing him and a guy ahead of him ready to take a run at his knee when he caught the ball, no one was chasing Bortles at all. If there really was no one open down the field he should have thrown it away, the steelers had a guy waiting for that play ready to try to take Thomas out for the season and either Bortles didn't see him, or didn't care and just went ahead and threw the ball anyway. There was no need to take that risk on the best player on the team when he's two yards beyond the line of scrimmage and running hard at the sideline.
