Fully agree.  By the casting and location, they are obviously attempting to reach out beyond their current viewer base.

 

Seems to me they are struggling a bit with the backstory.  The introductions were a bit forced and seemed rushed/not well thought out.  That's understandable, given the original series had the benefit of the story already being written, and for the most part the storyboard already drawn up.  So well so, that many images were duplicated on camera straight from the source material.  This series didn't have that benefit, and it was indicative in the final product.

 

Now that we are past many of those introductions, perhaps things will level out and they can find their footing.  Like a plane landing/taking off it isn't always smooth until cruising altitude.  As disappointed as I was, I have faith it will get much better as the series develops.  Once the alliances begin and survival mode hits full throttle the story and it's characters will really have room to shine.
