The way I understand it is that it was something routine they felt would heal on it's own.

As it was healing, there was not enough stability in the finger/ligaments - which is what requires surgery to speed up/remedy.

Not something that would have required surgery from the beginning, so somewhat unavoidable and unexpected.

That's how I understood it as well. Apparently there was a 90% chance his injury would heal as normally thought without needing surgery. But #BecauseJaguars his injury happened to fall into the 10% window requiring surgery.
