Kentucky Clerk Is Jailed For Refusal to Issue Marriage Licenses As A Result Of Her Religious Beliefs

#97

Quote:That depends. What's the stat line on the influx of cash to her martyr cause?
Quote:Has she reached her Go Fund Me goal yet? No? Oh ok, back to prison it is. Maybe she needs a photo ops with 5 GOP nominees instead of 2.
True story: she can't have a GoFundMe page. GFM changed their policies so that people convicted of a crime can't raise funds related to that crime, or something along those lines. Basically, any fundraising for her will have to go through traditional channels.

Or Kickstarter.

Quote:  Kim Davis is head of the department.  She's in a responsible position.   If she decides to keep the job AND she believes that it would be harmful to those under her to offer the licenses,   I think she would be making a huge mistake if she let them proceed.
How? It's a simple rule of law. She took an oath swearing to uphold the law, and swore to perform all lawful duties of her office. If she refuses to perform those duties on any grounds, she should either resign or be jailed until she either complies with the law or resigns. The judge gave her the option of not performing those duties herself, but simply allowing her staff to. The judge has gone above and beyond what the law requires, and possibly created a dangerous loophole in the process, yet she insists upon violating the lawful duties of her office.

Religion does not play into government decisions, period. The First Amendment guarantees that. If she has a problem with the job duties on religious grounds, she should resign. If she insists on violating the law, then she should sit in prison until she resigns, is impeached or follows the law.

Quote:Why is the judge releasing her on a condition that she has not, and apparently will not agree to?
Because her office is complying with the law, and bringing her office into compliance was the only reason for her imprisonment. When she returns to work, a gay couple will walk in and ask for a marriage license, she'll block it from happening, the judge will get a phone call, and she'll be back in jail so that the lawful duties of the office can be carried out once again.

I keep seeing it written that the Kentucky legislature won't impeach her. I'm not so sure about that. By the time they're back in session, they might consider it to be roughly the equivalent of taking your rabid dog out back and putting one between its eyes.
