Pros and Cons of firing Gus Bradley
|
While I'm as unhappy as anyone about the outcome of our opener, let's not get premature here. Talking about firing Gus just one game into the season? Seriously? We've had this discussion before, in detail, so there's really no point in flogging this horse again after only one game into the season.
Let's give Gus this season to show us what he can do as HC. He himself has said 'the team is built'. The Jags do have talent on the roster now on both offense and defense and we're not pure rookies anymore. He doesn't need to win a super bowl or make the play-off's or even reach 8-8 this season. The challenge is to see if the team can get to 6-10. That is a pathetic goal, but for this team it's a realistic goal. If we can pull out at least a 6-10 record (good wins, not garbage wins), then I think that the negatives of firing Gus should lead us to hang on to him a little longer. If on the other hand after three years into a complete rebuild we can't even pull out a sorry 6-10 record, then someone has to be held accountable. If the primary culprit turns out to be poor quarterback performance (like we witnessed against the panthers) then I'd say Dave Caldwell is more culpable than Gus Bradley is for the debacle. If it seems to be more of an issue of poor scheming and even poorer preparation then yes, Gus Bradley should indeed be on the hot seat at the end of the season. Arguably, since Dave is the one who hired Gus, if Gus goes then Dave should be on the hot seat too. However, understand this; firing the HC (and possibly the GM) would be devastating for the team. We would be looking at another three years of 'rebuilding' in the image of the new HC; and there is no guarantee that the new HC would be any better than what we had. I would be v e r y s l o w to jump on the 'fire Gus' bandwagon until it becomes almost mandatory. |
