They're banking on teams being impatient and forcing throws. If a team is patient and the receivers go upfield on every catch instead of attemting to juke the defense, success can be had vs them.

 

I would say, if you're going to give up 5 yard passes, then the Pats will throw 5 yard passes right on down the field and you will never stop them.   At some point, you have to man up and press those WRs, but you can't do that with bigger, slower CBs.   New England's offense is designed to slice a soft zone to bits.  It's death by a thousand cuts.  The only way to stop that is to get up on them and press them, otherwise, they will throw underneath all day and never ever punt.   You need smaller, quicker CBs to do that successfully.   Defenses seem to be designed these days to stop bigger WRs like Brandon Marshall, and that means they cannot cover Julian Edelman or Danny Amendola, especially if someone as accurate as Tom Brady is throwing the ball.
