How good is Blake Bortles?
|
Bortles is playing below average... but man, he flashes such elite potential. He has improved in a lot of areas this season. Maneuvering in the pocket, better mechanics, has improved on reading defenses. Is he still inconsistent in reading defenses and accuracy? Definitely. I'm not going to give up on him after a bad game against a Belichek defense. He played well against Miami, although was inconsistent. We really need to give him a running game, and another reliable receiver. Having Julius Thomas will help. He's had pretty good pass protection this season, which suprises me because the defenses we have been playing have strong front 7s. I can see him having a good game against Indy, because they have a weaker front 7. We better be able to run the ball against Indy.
Bortles will continue to improve throughout the season. We aren't making the playoffs, or atleast I don't expect it. Next year is the year Bortles should make that leap into being a top 20 qb. I know our fan base doesn't want to be patient with him because of what Gabbert was in his 3rd season, but there's really nothing this season that can happen that will change my mind that Bortles is a potential franchise qb. Bortles is the type of prospect that should've sat for 2 or 3 years, like Aaron Rogers did. Obviously, Bortles didn't have that luxury here and was thrown in before being ready. If Bruce Arians saw Bortles as the only franchise qb in the 2014 draft, then I believe it. This is the prove - it year for Gus, Joeckel, Cyp, Gratz, Denard, and Caldwell too. Not the defining year for Bortles, IMO. I'm patient with him.
