I'm guessing others have answered this so I what I have to say might sound like an echo, but here goes...


 

Gabbert shyed away in the pocket whenever pressure got anywhere near him, and for that matter he never showed the ability to accurately sense pressure. At times you'd see him run from ghost pressure, and at times it's like he could sense it but had no clue from which direction and would run right into the pass rusher. Defenders would also get him from behind without him having any clue, and he was almost never effective at escaping the pocket without being caught, and if he did he couldn't throw on the run at all. As far as his passing, I'll give Gabbert a nicer looking pass, a stronger arm and even a slightly quicker release, however, he had no abilitiy to see beyond 20 yards downfield whatsoever. He'd take more chances than Henne downfield, but it typically took clean breaks for him to find someone open, and when he did he'd almost always overthrow the receiver. But if guys were making moves to come free downfield, he wasn't able to see any of that.


 

All of these things I just mentioned are the polar opposite with Blake. Blake has an excellent pocket presence where he can sense and properly move to avoid pressure. If pressure does comes, he's consistently able to get outside while throwing a nice pass on the run. Blake is able to properly decipher precisely what's going on downfield and will throw to the deepest guy getting open. Blake has excellent touch and a nice arc on his passes as well where you see the ball floating right into his guys hands downfield. The arc is high enough for the receiver to track it. Gabbert's throws looked more like strikes, except he had no control on his depth accuracy and guys couldn't get up under his passes. The combination of zero pocket prosence and zero ability to see downfield were just too much for Gabbert to succees. He was a smart quarterback who tried hard and had a strong arm, but he's simply never going to amount to anything in this league with those faults that I truly believe cannot be corrected.


 

Statisically there's a significant difference as well. Blake will have games where he's around a 8 YPC and over 55 percent accurate whereas Gabbert always seemed to finish around 5 YPA and under 45 percent accurate. Gabbert would also have mid-range throws that were simply way off the mark whereas Bortles is extremely accurate in the short-to-midrange, and only seems to lose accuracy on his deeper passes.


 

As runners both qbs possessed similar speed. Gabbert might even be a hair faster if it were a straight-line race, however, Blake looks more natural as a runner and is quicker to find lanes where he can pick up big yards. The other thing I really like about Blake is his ability to improve. Coming into the league, both qbs possessed issues with their foot mechanics. Bortles improved this in one offseason and now does a great job with his feet. Gabbert never improved his foot mechanics. Bortles also improved his throwing motion considerably to where he now has a nice, quick release. Gabbert actually always had a nice, quick release as that was one of the best things about him as a qb.


 

Finally there's the obvious in terms of durabliity and size where Bortles kind of resembles Big Ben while Gabbert resemebles Manziel.


 

I believe right now Bortles is just below average as a starting qb, and that he'll probably move into the average category by season's end at the rate he seems to be progressing. I have hope that in time Blake will move up into the good category, etc, and that the sky is the limit for him. I do think he has what it takes to one day take this team to the Super Bowl. Gabbert will never achieve such acclaim and I don't see him ever truly improving beyond the level of an average NFL backup.
