I respectfully disagree.  Everything I know of LA says it is one of the most vacant cities in America.  There of all places, the kids would have caught wind of this as they overdosed on things trending on twitter or reddit and it would have spread like wildfire.  Just look what teens did for Slenderman.   That the show even has a character who has seen zombies on the internet and knows what's coming, but seemingly because he is portrayed as a weird loner type, we are supposed to believe the rest of the internet was incapable of picking up a buzz about this.  They could have done a whole angle on how the kids figure it out first and the adults need convincing.
