But I don't see how a person can be a good defensive coach and not be good at in game adjustments.

I should re-phrase perhaps. I think the issue is that, as head coach, he doesnt do as good a job of overseeing adjustments as he should. The head coach has to delegate, sure, but they also should be on top of what's going on in the overall scheme of things, and in constant communication with their coordinators. If on Monday Gus says "yeah, we probably should have done that", then he needs to do a better job of talking to his coordinators IN GAME.
