The cream always rises to the top. Northwestern was a top 15 team early, Florida was, ND was as high as 11 in preseason polls, etc.

 

On the flip side, Michigan St. and Northern Illinois were unranked pre-season.

 

The "ranking at the time" arguments are pointless. The BCS computers don't take "ranking at the time" into account, they take the strength of schedule. When Team A beats " 8th ranked at the time" Team B it means nothing now if Team B is unranked, or tumbled down to 25.

 

I never inferred the win was meaningless, but it doesn't hold water like some would like it to.
