Is this the worst Jacksonville Defense of all time?

#92

Quote:I have to say yes,.  We are at the bottom of almost every statistical category.  We make mediocre QB's look like all pro's and we can't create a turnover to save our lives.  I say this is worst then the 95 expansion defense.  Just pathetic across the board.

The philosophy that Gus is preaching is flawed. There is a reason Seattle is the ONLY current team to effectively use a fairly vanilla non-blitzing 3 deep safety scheme and dominate the league as defensive-minded team. You need some great players that perfectly fit that system, and not too many of those players exist (Bobby Wagner, Earl Thomas, etc.). The last team with such system was probably Tampa Bay, and before that I could not even name a like successful simple defensive system in the 90's. To ever succeed with that scheme, you HAVE to have some very good pass rushers (like Seattle has) or generational talent like that Tampa team - prime Warren Sapp.

Most recent-era effective defensive teams were much more aggressive, trying the force the issue with blitzing packages, a la Baltimore, Steelers, early Patriots, Giants superbowl runs, etc. Yes, you still need some playmakers, but the team utilize scheme to play up players strengths and to dictate what they want their opponent to do.

We do NOT do that. In today's age with quick offenses and technology to quickly and easily look through tape, formations, and tendencies, it crazy to to think that the Jags will be able to draft another group of players with that talent level and succeed. I was hoping that part of the philosophy was coaching up their players to fit the scheme, but after 3 years it is obvious they do not know how to coach up a pass rusher or coverage LB.

On top of that, what they should have down was OVER-invest in pass-rushers because of how much of a game changer and need they are, instead of going all in on basically 1 player every year (J. Allen, C. Clemons, and now D. Fowler.)
