2014 NFL Draft - Rounds 1 and 2

#25

At this point, the debate about which is better between Bortles/Lee or Mack/Carr is undecided. I do believe that Bortles will be better than Carr, although at this point they both show great potential. Obviously, Mack is a stud and will probably be a perennial pro bowler, but if Bortles ends up being a true franchise q.b. it will go down as Caldwell's best pick ever.

The 2014 draft was incredible. Although Lee looks like a bust, nobody can legitimately criticize that pick. He has elite talent and would have been a top 5 pick if he was in the 2013 draft. Caldwell's pick of Robinson deserves an A+ grade. He saw tremendous value and made the move even though he had just selected Lee. This is the reason taking the BAP is always better than drafting based on need alone. Even though he probably suspected Blackmon would never make it back and there was still a need at receiver, it would have been safer to select someone other than Robinson at another position of need. Instead, he followed his gut and got a potential pro bowl receiver in Robinson by trading up into the 2nd with the 49ers.

It is not far fetched to say that from this draft 4 or 5 players can eventually make a pro bowl- Bortles, Robinson, Linder, Colvin and Telvin Smith. I have not seen any references to Luke Bowanko, but he can turn out to be a valuable player down the road. He will likely be their starting center of the future, and even if they resign Wisnieuski to remain the starter Bowanko can fill in at most positions on the offensive line. Caldwell's getting this 6th rounder for Blaine Gabbert was highway

robbery.

The 2015 draft can not compare to 2014, however if Fowler is what they believe he is this draft class will also be excellent. Caldwell may have made some mistakes so far, however his drafting has been excellent and overall he has done a good job. His hardest decision will be whether to fire his friend, Gus Bradley, if he continues to perform so poorly as the head coach. This will have to be decided upon at the end of this season.
