Whatever, if they wanted to take the host-pathogen route to the dead and non-living, so be it - it's still a good show.

 

Also, I don't think what you said is the point of the virus in the show. It's just a lack of understanding, or a disregard, in how a virus works - but I understand that it makes telling the story a lot easier.
 

We're talking about the undead in a tv show, the real life properties of anything are whatever they want them to be. That's why the inverse properties of life and death can apply to both the body and the virus.
