I think golf is the best analogy.

 

In golf, there there has always been that segment that loses their ability regardless of their effort to correct their stroke. Physically there is nothing wrong but their precision goes away. I don't know if it is a focus thing or their nervous system no longer fires in a precise predictable way and their muscle memory becomes unreliable.

 

You can point to outside issues for someone like Woods, but there have been other guys like David Duval who was #1 in the world and suddenly his skills just vanished.
