His new contract that, no doubt, came with a mandate to win and win often probably nudged him in that direction, as did the Jaguars' well-publicized trouble with the law that culminated in Richard Collier's shooting.


Whatever the motivation, his abrupt personality shift alienated his veteran leaders (most notably Mike Peterson), and he lost the locker room. If he hadn't been saddled with Gene Smith as his second GM, he might have been able to rebuild and make the team moderately successful again, but long term, the guy was not the answer.
