I thought, way back when Rick was in the house with Morgan and Duane in the first episode, that they were going with some type of "the zombie retains part of its humanity" when the mom came up and scratched almost inquisitively at the door knob. But they went with the full on "nothing left" routine with TS-19 and then the Milton experiments, so I guess it wasn't to be.
